Chris Jones contract incentives: How Chiefs star made $1.25M sack bonus in Week 18 vs. Chargers

The Chris Jones campaign has been an interesting one this season, and it became even more so in the Chiefs’ 13-12 win over the Chargers on Sunday.

Jones started Week 1 surrounded by his agents as he sat in a luxury box watching the rest of the Kansas City team play as he continued to hold out. Week 18 saw a very different scene, though, as the crowd roared for Jones and he was instantly met by a flock of fellow Chiefs after he surpassed 10 sacks, triggering a $1.25 million bonus.

I lost so much money holding out, so I’m just making money back that I lost,” Jones joked to CBS after the game. “The whole team knew the only reason I was playing was for a sack, OK.”

It was one of the most eventful happenings in an otherwise inconsequential game for the Chiefs in which tight end Travis Kelce did not take the field as Kansas City already sat firmly atop the AFC West with the No. 3 seed in the conference.

Kelce was just one of several starters, including star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, to take an off day for the Chiefs.

Jones put in a standout performance, generating 12 pressures on 31 pass rush snaps, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

Social media had plenty to say in reaction to that.
