As Chris Jones was heard telling his Kansas City Chiefs teammates last weekend, it turns out most of us have been pronouncing the Kelce name wrong for years.
NFL siblings Travis and Jason Kelce have been widely referred to as the ‘Kel-see’ brothers for years, but Jones is one of a select few who knows that is not the right way to say it.
During their Wild Card Round victory over the Miami Dolphins last Saturday, the Chiefs defensive tackle was captured by Inside the NFL’s cameras telling his teammates how to pronounce Kelce properly.
To back up Jones’ claim, Travis and Jason have confirmed that ‘Kels’ is the correct way to pronounce their last name on a few occasions in the past.
When their dad Ed made a guest appearance on their New Heights podcast last year, the Kelce brothers got to the bottom of the confusion surrounding their last name.
Ed revealed that he had grown tired of correcting people who mistakenly referred to him as ‘Kel-si’, meaning he decided to simply go along with the wrong pronunciation.
He also claimed that Travis and Jason’s mom, Donna, even thought his surname was pronounced that way back in the day.
‘That’s a good reason to stop,’ Jason joked. ‘That’s as good as I’ve heard. So you changed your entire family’s name over generations because you were tired of correcting people.’
He then asked his dad if he should refer to himself as ‘Kels’ going forward.
‘Do whatever you want,’ Ed replied. ‘I did.’
The Kelce name has become significantly more prominent over the past four months amid Travis’ high-profile romance with pop sensation Taylor Swift.
